Neurobiology of EMDR:
what does the data say?
Seminar for therapists
In the light of recent discoveries it is becoming clear that bilateral stimulation has complex effects on the brain not limited to a single domain, such as working memory, alleged REM sleep-like state or interhemispheric connections. In this seminar we will discuss results of published neurobiological experiments so that EMDR practitioners could provide up-to-date information to their clients.

They are not limited to a single domain, such as working memory, alleged REM sleep-like state or interhemispheric connections. In this seminar we will discuss results of published neurobiological experiments so that EMDR practitioners could provide up-to-date information to their clients.
Programme
After a short primer on some of the relevant basic neuroscience concepts we will explore three main topics:
Bilateral stimulation
  • Bilateral stimulation decreases amygdala activation: how?
  • Working memory and bilateral stimulation
  • Reset of neuronal oscillations in hippocampus upon eye movements
Cognitive protocol of EMDR
  • EMDR and norepinephrine
  • Memory reconsolidation and transformative protocols of psychotherapy
How does therapy change the brain?
  • Fundamentals of PTSD neurobiology
  • What is known about brain effects of traumatherapy?

Ekaterina Vinnik, MD, PhD

  • PhD in cognitive neuroscience

  • Described a new auditory illusion, author of scientific papers on systems neuroscience and neurobiology of sensory perception

  • Lecturer at international conferences in Latvia, England, Portugal and Russia

  • Author of the Neurobiology of depression and trauma course for psychologists, attended by 1000 people

"... Since her first years of medical school, neuroscience has been providing the most satisfying answers in Ekaterina's quest to understand the human mind. Brain science is inseparable from behavioral science, and studying human behavior and the brain naturally grew into an interest in cognitive technologies."
